PRESS BRIEF – PUNJAB TOURISM
Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board (PHTPB) in the recent months has taken numerous initiatives to bring Punjab on the Tourist Map of the World. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has made a Master Plan for Punjab in 2008, which is now in the implementation stage. UNWTO has also made detailed plans for Amritsar, Patiala, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi and Ropar. In these Cities, plans have been made for development of Heritage Walks, for the National and International Tourists. An agreement has been signed between PHTPB and Mr. Debashish Nayak, Advisor, Heritage Programme, Municipal Corporation, Ahmedabad on 14.12.2010 to develop Heritage Walks in State of Punjab. These will include Heritage Walks at Amritsar, Sultanpur Lodhi, Patiala & Kapurthala. Heritage Walk is considered a tool to discover uniqueness of the city by both the people residing in the city as well by the tourists. It also trigger many activities which relates to employment generation & conservation of urban structure etc. It is proposed to complete the planning and initiation of Heritage Walks for the 4 Cities within a period of six months. Mr. Debashish Nayak, is a nationally known figure, who has developed Heritage Walks in many cities in India and abroad, which has eventually triggered off the development of the historical areas of these cities. He is presently based in Ahmedabad and has been responsible for initiating the process to bring Ahmedabad to the status of a World Heritage City. He is an Architect, who has specialized in Urban Heritage Conservation from Rome, and has won many National and International awards. He is also the State Project Coordinator, Gujarat, for implementing the National Mission Programme of Archaeological Survey of India. The process initiated in Ahmedabad has now been recognised as a model for reviving the Historic cities of India. Mr.Deabshish Nayak has already been around the Cities of Amritsar and Sultanpur Lodhi. He has suggested the Heritage Walk plan for the City of Amritsar, and is in the process of drawing a plan for Sultanpur Lodhi. He is visiting the City of Patiala on 14 & 15 December 2010 and will draw up a plan for the Heritage Walk after his visit.
